GMAT Official Practice Exams Review

GMAT Official Practice Exams are worth buying, and almost everyone buys them at the wrong time. They are the only mocks that use retired real GMAT questions and the exam's own scoring algorithm, so they are the only practice scores you should plan a test date around. Two of the six are free, four cost $107.99 together, and the detail that decides when you should pay is buried in the terms of use rather than the product page.

GMAT Official Practice Exams Overview

GMAC writes the GMAT, and it sells six full-length practice exams built from questions that used to appear on it. That provenance is the entire product. Every other mock on our GMAT practice test roundup is written by someone imitating GMAT questions from the outside.

The six split into two purchases:

• Exams 1 and 2 come free inside the GMAT Official Starter Kit, along with 70 or more official questions across Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights.
• Exams 3 to 6 are paid, sold as a four-pack or in smaller pieces.

Both sets deliver what GMAC calls the real thing: exam format and timing, questions that adapt in difficulty as you improve, and a Total Score with section scores aligned to the live scale and percentile rankings. The Starter Kit also carries study mode and exam mode, custom practice sets by question type and difficulty, and time-management insights.

One useful change this year. The Exams 3 to 6 bundle is now marked as updated for 2026 with more Data Insights questions, which answers the longest-running complaint about this product. Data Insights is the newest section and was the thinnest covered.

GMAT Official Practice Exams Review For 2026

The scores are the only ones worth trusting

This is the part no competitor can copy. GMAC states that the practice exams use the same scoring algorithm as the real GMAT exam and return a Total Score and section scores aligned to the real scale and percentile rankings.

That matters more than any feature comparison. A third-party mock gives you a number produced by somebody's model of the GMAT. An official mock gives you a number produced by the GMAT's own model. When you are deciding whether to keep your test date or move it four weeks, only one of those is evidence.

GMAC is also unusually candid about the limits of its own scores. Its GMAT FAQ page answers the question of why students do better on practice than on the real thing with four reasons, and puts test anxiety first, calling it the most likely explanation. Natural day-to-day variation and timing pressure follow. Read that as the test maker telling you your official mock score is an upper bound on a good day, not a guarantee.

One claim on the bundle page deserves a label. GMAC says research shows first-time test takers can increase their scores by up to 75 points after taking all of the official practice exams. That is a vendor claim with no published study attached, and "up to" is doing the work. Treat it as marketing.

What you do not get is the explanation

Look at what GMAC advertises. The Starter Kit and the Exams 3 to 6 pages both list what you get, and both lists run to score reports, performance analytics, practice modes and time-management insights. Neither mentions answer explanations. Now look at the prep store listings for the Official Guide and the section review guides, which are sold explicitly on "detailed answer explanations". GMAC knows explanations sell. It is not selling them here.

So the official exams tell you that you got a Data Insights question wrong and cannot tell you why. That is a real gap in a product this expensive, and it is why you should not treat these as your only purchase. The standard fixes are the GMAT Official Guide, which carries explanations for its own question set, or the official question banks. A resource with worked solutions is not optional alongside these exams.

The second structural limit is the pool. There are six exams, each can be reset and taken twice, and the question pool is fixed, so a reset surfaces questions you have already seen. A reset mock inflates your score and is not a clean data point. Plan on six clean scores in total, not twelve.

The clock starts when you pay

Here is the finding that should change how you buy.

The common advice, repeated across GMAT forums and in our own roundup until today, is that you can buy the official exams early and start the clock later by waiting to activate them. That is wrong for a student buying for themselves.

GMAC's terms of use for GMAT Official Practice says in section 4.3 that access to a paid service "shall commence upon the date that you first purchase such Service" and continues for twelve months from that date. Purchase, not activation.

The activation version of the rule does exist, in section 14, and it governs bulk orders: an organisation buying multiple activation codes must hand them to its end users within twelve months, and each user's twelve months run from receiving the code. If you are one student with one card, section 14 is not about you.

There is no undo. The same clause states you have no right to cancel or receive a refund once you have purchased. This is the one product in GMAT prep where waiting is strictly better than being organised early.

Pricing

Buying piecemeal costs exactly the list price. Take the cautious route that feels sensible, Exams 3 and 4 first at $59.99, then Exam 5 at $34.99, then Exam 6 at $34.99, and you pay $129.97. The four-pack is $107.99. You have paid $21.98 more for the same four exams. The number is not a coincidence: $129.97 is precisely the struck-through list price on the bundle page. GMAC's discount is the penalty for buying one SKU at a time, priced to the cent.

All six exams cost $18.00 each. The bundle is $107.99 for four, which is $27.00 an exam. Add the two free ones from the Starter Kit and you hold six official full-lengths for $107.99, or $18.00 apiece. Against e-GMAT SIGma-X at $49.80 a full-length, that is the best value in official-quality GMAT testing by a distance.

So the bundle wins on price, and the clock is the reason it might still not win for you. If your test date is more than a year out, four exams at $107.99 with twelve months from purchase may expire unused, and $59.99 for Exams 3 and 4 now, with the rest later, is the safer shape even at $21.98 more. The rule is simple: buy the bundle if you will sit all four within a year, and only then.

The Premium GMAT Study Collection at $299.99, down from $350.90, wraps the exams together with the Official Guide series. Judge that one as a books purchase, since the Official Guide bundle is where most of its value sits.

Who GMAT Official Practice Exams Are Best For

• Everyone sitting the GMAT, at minimum for the two free exams. There is no argument for skipping a free official diagnostic scored by the real algorithm.
• Students eight to twelve weeks from test day who want a reliable read on where they stand and have somewhere else to do their volume practice.
• Retakers deciding whether a rebooked date is realistic, since a third-party mock cannot answer that question honestly.
• Anyone rationing mocks, because six clean scores is what you have and each one should be earned rather than spent on diagnosis.

When You Might Look Elsewhere

• You need volume, not calibration. Six exams will not carry a three-month plan. Experts' Global sells 15 full-lengths with the first free, and the scores are directional rather than predictive. Use them for stamina and pacing, and keep the official six for calibration.
• You want to know why you got it wrong. GMAT Club Tests come with community and expert explanations and run harder than the real exam, which is the direct answer to GMAC's biggest gap.
• One weak sub-section is capping you. e-GMAT SIGma-X runs sectional mocks from a separate question pool, so drilling Data Insights for a fortnight never burns a full-length.
• You would rather build sets than sit tests. Target Test Prep has no full-length adaptive mocks at all, and instead lets you build unlimited targeted sets with an explanation on every question.

Final Verdict

The marks come off for three things GMAC could fix and has not. There are no advertised answer explanations on a product that costs $107.99. The pool is fixed, so your six clean scores are genuinely six. And the twelve-month clock runs from purchase with no refund, a term that punishes the organised student and is disclosed in the terms of use rather than on the page where you click buy.
