The set is seven books covering every section of the exam: Behavioral Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. That is 3,596 pages, and the 2027-2028 edition was published on 14 July 2026.

Two things changed in this edition. Kaplan added 500+ new full-color science images, which it calls the biggest visual update it has made to the set. And the CARS book was rebuilt from scratch, with skill-by-skill breakdowns, targeted Skillbuilder drills, and complete AAMC-modeled passage sets. CARS is the section students most often say a book cannot teach, so a full rewrite is worth noticing.

The teaching is the reason to buy, and High-Yield Badges are the reason it works

Kaplan's house style is to explain rather than compress. The books read like a patient instructor talking you through a topic, which is why they are the standard recommendation for students coming back to science coursework after a few years away. If the last time you saw a Krebs cycle diagram was four years ago, this is the set written for you.

The High-Yield Badge system is the feature that earns its keep. Kaplan flags the concepts the AAMC tests most often, so when you run out of time, the books tell you what to cut. That is a different and more useful thing than page count. Content is aligned to the official AAMC outline and every released AAMC resource, including the September 2025 exam, so the flagging is current.

The pre-chapter quizzes matter more than they sound. Reading a chapter you already know is the most common way to waste a study week, and a five-minute quiz before you start is what stops it.

Three full-length tests is thin, and there is no question bank at all

Three full-lengths for a $196.76 set is the real weakness, and it gets worse when you notice there is no question bank either. You get pre-chapter quizzes and end-of-chapter practice, and then you are out of Kaplan questions.

This is where students get caught. You buy the set expecting it to carry you through content review and into practice, and around week six you discover you need a separate source of questions. At that point you are buying Kaplan's MCAT Qbank at $199 for 3 months or $299 for 12, on top of the $196.76 you already spent.

Kaplan publishes no practice-question total for this set

Here is a small thing that tells you something. Kaplan does not state how many practice questions are in this set. Not on the books page above, and not in the Amazon listing it sends you to, which runs to a long feature list and full product details without ever giving a number.

The only MCAT question count Kaplan publishes is the 3,000+ in its Qbank, and that is a separate product. So if you see a practice-question figure attached to this box set, it is not coming from Kaplan, and you should not plan your prep around it.

The same goes for the box art, which reads "Higher Score Guaranteed" with an asterisk. Neither the product page nor the listing publishes terms for the book set, and the guarantee pages on kaptest.com return 404. Treat the set as having no guarantee, because nothing you can read says otherwise.

The upgrade costs $106.46 and includes a Qbank that Kaplan prices at $299 on its own.

The book set is $196.76 against a $299.99 list price, a 34 percent discount on the day we checked. Over the 12 months of online access that works out to $16.40 a month. Kaplan does not control that price: there is no direct checkout, so the figure moves with Amazon rather than with Kaplan, and it is worth opening the listing on the day you buy.

Now the arithmetic that decides this purchase. The MCAT Self-Study Toolkit is $303.22 against a $459.99 list. It contains the identical seven books, plus 6 full-length tests instead of 3, plus the 3,000+ question customizable Qbank, on the same 12 months of access. That is $106.46 more, or $25.27 a month.

For that $106.46 you get three extra full-lengths and a Qbank that Kaplan sells on its own for $299 for 12 months. Put another way, the entire Toolkit costs $4.22 more than the Qbank by itself. There is no reading of those three prices where the book set is the better buy for a student who still needs practice questions, and almost every student does.

The cost per full-length tells the same story: $65.59 a test with the books alone, $50.54 with the Toolkit.

One more price to ignore. Used copies start at $152.16, a saving of $44.60. The online access code is a sticker inside the box, so a used set is a bet that the previous owner never scratched it off. Lose that bet and you have paid $152.16 for print books and no tests.

Who Kaplan MCAT Books Are Best For

The books deserve their reputation. Seven sections covered clearly, 500+ new images, a rebuilt CARS book, High-Yield Badges that tell you what matters, and content current through the September 2025 exam. As a first pass through MCAT content, nothing is easier to actually finish, and a 4.7 rating across 192 ratings reflects that.

The honest weakness is not the writing, it is the package. Three full-lengths and no question bank leaves you short of practice at exactly the point in your prep where practice is all that matters. Kaplan has already solved that, in a bundle sold on the same page as the books.
