Wyzant GMAT Tutoring Review

Wyzant is the cheapest route to one-on-one GMAT tutoring we track, because it is the only one that will sell you a single hour. Its GMAT tutors page headlines an average of $40 to $85 an hour, but the 25 tutors that same page puts in front of you charge $55 to $319, with a median of $110.

That gap is the whole review. The number is still low next to branded GMAT tutoring, where the cheapest published hour is $180, so Wyzant remains the value option. It is just not the $40 option, and what you save on the rate you spend on screening.

Wyzant GMAT Tutoring Overview

Wyzant is a tutoring marketplace, not a GMAT prep company. It does not write questions, run classes, or publish a study plan. It runs the listings, the scheduling, the online classroom and the payments, and takes a cut of what the tutor charges.

What that gets you:

• 468 GMAT tutors listed on the subject page, each with a public profile, a published hourly rate, a star rating, a review count and a running total of hours taught
• Pay per lesson. No package, no minimum number of hours, no contract, and no charge to search or message tutors before you book
• Online or in person. Most cards offer both. Wyzant lists GMAT tutors by city as well as nationally
• An online classroom with a shared whiteboard for the sessions themselves
• A first-hour refund if a new tutor turns out to be the wrong match

What it does not get you is everything a prep company sells. There is no question bank, no full-length practice exam, no Official Guide, no score report and no syllabus. If your tutor brings materials, those are their materials. Wyzant GMAT Tutoring Review For 2026

The advertised rate and the rates on the page are not the same number

Wyzant's GMAT page carries a price widget headlined "GMAT Tutors Cost $40 - 85 per hour on average", with a slider running from $30 to $175. Directly above it, the same page features 25 tutors with their rates printed on the cards.

Those 25 rates, in ascending order: $55, $60, $60, $65, $70, $70, $75, $80, $85, $90, $100, $100, $110, $115, $115, $125, $135, $149, $149, $150, $160, $200, $300, $300 and $319.

The median is $110. Nine of the 25 fall inside the advertised $40 to $85 band and 16 sit above it. Not one is below $55, so the $30 floor on Wyzant's own slider is not represented by a single tutor the page shows you.

None of this makes the widget false. Wyzant lists 468 GMAT tutors and the cheap ones exist somewhere in that list. But the featured 25 are the default best-match set, which is what a student actually sees, and sorting a marketplace by quality tends to sort it by price at the same time. Budget from the $110 median, not from the headline.

You are screening for the current exam, and the platform is not helping

A marketplace does not own the curriculum, which means the quality control is yours. Wyzant gives you real tools for it: every profile carries a rating, a review count, hours taught and a response time, and the reviews name the subject the student was studying.

Use them, because the platform's own GMAT copy is out of date. The "About GMAT" text on the same page says the exam "evaluates abilities in quantitative analysis, verbal reasoning, integrated reasoning, and analytical writing". GMAC retired that structure in 2023. The current GMAT exam structure is three sections, Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, 64 questions in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Wyzant pairs the retired section list with the current 205 to 805 score scale in the same paragraph. The four tutor answers published lower down the page under "Expert Tutors" are dated March and May 2018, and one of them describes "four sections: analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative, and verbal" as the current format.

The practical consequence is a screening question. Ask any Wyzant tutor how many students they have taught on the Focus Edition and what they do about Data Insights, which is the section with no equivalent in the old exam. A tutor who last taught the GMAT in 2021 can still teach quant, but they have not taught a third of the test you are sitting. The Good Fit Guarantee is a refund, not a free lesson

The page says "Love Your Lesson Or It's Free", which reads like a free trial. It is not one. Wyzant's help centre article on the Good Fit Guarantee is explicit that "this does not mean that you will not be initially charged for your first lesson". You pay, and you ask for the money back afterwards.

Three limits worth knowing before you rely on it:

• It covers the first hour only, not the whole first lesson. A 2-hour first session with a tutor who does not work out costs you one hour
• It applies only to a tutor you have not had a lesson with before, so it resets with each new tutor and never applies twice with the same one
• You must report the problem within 30 days of the lesson

Taken together it is a genuine safety net for trying people out, and it is the reason the one-hour minimum matters so much. Booking a single hour with three different tutors is a real screening strategy here, and one that costs nothing anywhere else because nowhere else sells one hour.

Wyzant GMAT Tutoring Pricing

There is no price list, because there is no product. Each tutor sets a rate and you see it before you book. Wyzant's widget puts the range at $30 to $175 an hour; the 25 tutors on the subject page run $55 to $319.

Against branded GMAT tutoring the median still wins comfortably. Princeton Review publishes the cheapest hour in that group at $180, and only inside a $5,400 package. Manhattan Prep gets to $283.30 an hour at 30 hours, an $8,499 outlay. Target Test Prep is a flat $350.

The arithmetic that matters is what the same money buys:

• Princeton Review's cheapest package is $2,200 for 10 hours. At Wyzant's $110 median that is 20 hours
• Manhattan Prep's floor is $3,499 for 10 hours. At $110 that is 31 hours, for $3,410
• Target Test Prep's smallest package is $1,750 for 5 hours. At $110 that is 15 hours

Those comparisons are hours against hours, and they ignore what the branded packages bundle. Manhattan Prep's $3,499 includes a 9-session course, six official full-length exams and the Official Guide set. Princeton Review's packages include six practice tests and all four Official Guides. Wyzant includes none of it. Who Wyzant GMAT Tutoring Is Best For

• Students who need a few targeted hours, not a programme. One weak area, three sessions, done. Nothing else in GMAT tutoring sells that
• Anyone already working through a course or self-study plan who wants a person to unstick one topic. The absence of a curriculum stops mattering when you already have one
• People who want to choose the individual. Rates, ratings, review counts and hours taught are all public before you pay, which is the opposite of the branded model where you are assigned a tutor
• Buyers on a real budget ceiling. At the $110 median you get roughly three times the hours per dollar of branded tutoring, and the cheapest well-reviewed listings start at $55
• Students who want in-person tutoring. Wyzant lists local tutors by city, and most branded GMAT tutoring is online only

When You Might Look Elsewhere

• You want the materials in the price. Manhattan Prep bundles a 9-session course, six official full-lengths and the Official Guide set into every package, and screens every tutor for a 99th percentile score

Final Verdict

The practical advice: plan at $110 an hour, not $40. Book a single hour with two or three tutors before committing to anyone, which is exactly what the Good Fit Guarantee and the one-hour minimum are for. Ask each of them how many Focus Edition students they have taught and how they handle Data Insights. If you need materials and a plan rather than a person, the money is better spent on a course.

The exam dropped analytical writing and integrated reasoning in 2023 and now runs three sections in 2 hours 15 minutes, so a tutor whose GMAT experience stopped before then has not taught a third of it. Is Wyzant worth it compared to a GMAT course?

It depends on whether you have a plan. If you already have a course or a study schedule and need a person for one weak area, a few Wyzant hours are the cheapest fix available. If you need structure, materials and a syllabus, a course costs less than the tutoring hours it would take to build one from scratch.
