Gold Standard MCAT Flashcards is free, and for 455 science questions that is a fair trade. What the product pages do not tell you is that the app stopped being maintained a long time ago: the iOS version on the App Store today is 1.8, released on 20 December 2017.

That single fact decides who should install it. As a free pocket supplement for physics and chemistry recall it still works. As the flashcard system you build a study plan around, it is the wrong tool, and the free MCAT Anki decks do that job far better.

Gold Standard is the test prep arm of Ruveneco Inc, a Montreal company that has sold MCAT books, practice tests and courses for two decades. This app is the free edge of that catalogue, drawn from the same material as its textbook.

The content is a fixed deck. You pick a subject, work through cards, and the app keeps your score and lets you flag cards to revisit. The provider is direct about what it is not, calling it "a learning tool for revision but it is not a multiple-choice practice exam" on its App Store listing. That is an honest description and worth taking at face value.

What you get:

• Biology, physics, general chemistry and organic chemistry.
• Diagrams and illustrations on the answer side of many cards.

This one carries short lessons from Dr. Ferdinand, the author of the Gold Standard textbook, covering topics such as Le Chatelier's principle, Snell's law and reaction mechanisms. The cards cover half the exam

The AAMC scores four sections: Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems, Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems, Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior, and Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. Each runs from 118 to 132, for a total of 472 to 528.

Gold Standard's four subjects map onto the first two and leave the other two untouched. There are no psychology or sociology cards and nothing for CARS, which together are half of what you are scored on. The provider does not hide this, but it does not state it either, so plan around it.

There is also a small inconsistency worth knowing before you install. The flashcards page on mcat-prep.com lists biochemistry among the subjects; both store listings describe the same 455 cards as biology, physics, general and organic chemistry only. Gold Standard sells a separate MCAT Biochemistry Flashcards app, which suggests the store listings are the accurate ones. Treat biochemistry as not covered here.

The app has not been updated in years

This is the part no other review states plainly. The App Store version history shows version 1.0 on 3 July 2013 and version 1.8 on 20 December 2017, with nothing since. The Google Play listing is older still, last updated on 6 January 2016.

The clearest evidence is inside the app itself. Its third card set is called "MCAT 45", a reference to the scoring scale used by the exam the AAMC administered for the last time in September 2014, when total scores ran from 3 to 45 with a mean of 25.2. Today's exam is scored 472 to 528. A deck still organised around the old scale was written for the old exam.

None of this makes a physics equation wrong. Ohm's law has not changed since 2017. It does mean the deck reflects an older view of what is high yield, and that nobody has revisited it against the current content outlines.

The platform is basic

There is no spaced repetition. You work through a subject and the app records a score, but it will not schedule a card to come back on the day you are about to forget it. That scheduling is the entire reason Anki dominates MCAT flashcard study, and its absence is the main functional gap.

The interface is the other cost of an unmaintained app. The screens are from the iOS 6 era and the listing states the app requires iOS 10.0 or later and is designed for iPhone, not verified for macOS. The rating base is close to nothing: one rating on the App Store and 500-plus installs on Google Play, so there is no meaningful user verdict to lean on.

On the positive side, Google Play's data safety section reports no data collected and no data shared with third parties, which is more than many free study apps can say.

There is one tier and it costs nothing. The app is free on both the App Store and Google Play, with no in-app purchase, no trial, no subscription and no account required to use the cards. There is no guarantee of any kind, which is normal for a free product.

Gold Standard does sell paid MCAT products, including practice tests and a CARS package, and the app links out to its site. The flashcards themselves are not a funnel with a paywall partway through, which is a genuine point in their favour.

Who Gold Standard MCAT Flashcards Is Best For

You want free physics and chemistry recall on your phone. This is the strongest case. The formula and reaction cards are clear, the diagrams help, and the price is zero.

You learn better from short video. Almost four hours of bundled lessons inside a free iPhone app is genuinely rare, and it works offline once installed.

You are early in content review. The Basic set is a reasonable first pass over vocabulary and definitions before you move to a serious deck.

Skip it if you need Psych/Soc or CARS, want spaced repetition, or are within a couple of months of your test date and need a resource built around the current content outlines.

When You Might Look Elsewhere

For most students a maintained deck is the better default:

• AnKing MCAT Deck is the best-maintained option, covers all four sections, and updates through AnkiHub.

Gold Standard MCAT Flashcards does one thing well: it hands a pre-med 455 clear science cards and four hours of video for free, with no account and no upsell. For a student who wants something to open in a queue or between classes, that has real value.

But a flashcard app is a system, not a pile of cards, and this one has not been maintained in nearly nine years. Half the scored exam is missing, there is no spaced repetition, and the deck is still organised around a scoring scale that was retired in 2014.
