Expert Rating
The Altius free MCAT practice exam is a half-length test: 113 questions, five attempts, and no payment card at any point. Altius says so in one line on its own page, which is worth knowing because the summaries around this product do not.
Google's AI overview for Altius in November 2026 described the free exam as four sections of 59, 53, 59 and 59 questions. That is 230, and it is the specification of the exams Altius charges for. The free one is roughly half that.

What the Altius free exam actually is
Altius is an MCAT-focused prep company. Its best known paid product is 1-on-1 mentoring, which we cover in our Altius MCAT course review, and it sells a line of practice exams separately from it.
The free exam is the entry point to that exam line. Altius frames it in four words on the page: "Try it before you buy it." You fill in a form, you get the test, and nothing is charged.
What you get:
- A half-length MCAT exam of 113 questions.
- Questions drawn from all four sections: CPBS, CARS, BBLS and PSBB.
- Five attempts at it.
- A chance to judge the "near perfect match to the MCAT" Altius advertises, before paying for it.
That last point is the quiet reason to take it. Altius positions the free exam as a preview of the ones it charges for, so it is a look at the product as well as a score.
Altius free exam review for 2026
Half-length means half-length
A real MCAT asks 230 questions: 59 in chemical and physical foundations, 53 in critical analysis and reasoning, 59 in biological and biochemical foundations, and 59 in psychological, social and biological foundations, according to the AAMC's description of the exam.
The Altius free exam is 113 of those. It covers every section, so the content signal is broad, but it is 117 questions short of the experience you are training for.

This matters more on the MCAT than on most exams. The hard part of test day is not question 40, it is question 190, and a half-length exam never puts you there. Use the score as a map of what you know. Do not read it as a prediction.
Five attempts, and a reason to use them
The free exam comes with five attempts rather than a single sitting.
That changes how you can use it. You can take it cold in week one, then again after a content block, and watch a specific section move. Retaking the same questions has obvious limits, and by the third pass you are partly measuring recall. Used early, though, a second attempt tells you whether a weak section is responding to study.
The form is the price
Nothing is charged, but the exam sits behind a form that asks for your phone number, your school and the date you plan to test.
That is a sales qualification form, and it is reasonable to expect contact from a company whose main product is mentoring packages. If you want a free baseline without handing over a phone number, the AAMC unscored sample test is the cleaner route.
What Altius does not say
Altius advertises over 1,500 performance metrics and section-level analysis on its paid practice exams. It does not say how much of that reporting comes with the free exam.
We are not going to claim it does or does not. Treat the analytics as unspecified until you are inside it, and judge the free test on the 113 questions, which are specified.
Pricing
The exam itself is free, and the paid line it samples is priced per test:
| Package | Price | Per exam |
|---|---|---|
| Free exam | $0 | Half-length, 5 attempts |
| 1 full-length | $40 | $40.00 |
| 5 full-lengths | $169 | $33.80 |
| 10 full-lengths | $299 | $29.90 |
Paid exams come with one year of access from the date of purchase and unlimited attempts at each test. Prices verified on the Altius practice exam page on November 7, 2026.
One note on the numbers circulating for this product: the same AI summary that called the free exam a full-length also quoted $199 for the ten-test package. Altius lists $299.
Who the Altius free exam is best for
Students who have not taken anything yet. If your prep has consisted of buying books, a free 113-question test across all four sections is the fastest way to find out which section is actually your problem.
Students considering the Altius paid exams. This is the only way to see the interface and question style before spending $40. Take it for that reason alone if you are weighing the five-test package.
Students who want to track one weak section. Five attempts means you can retake it after a content block instead of burning your only free sitting.
When you might look elsewhere
If you need endurance data. A half-length cannot give it. Full-lengths are the only thing that tells you how your accuracy holds in hour six, and our MCAT practice test listing covers the ones worth paying for.
If you want a score you can trust as a prediction. Use official material. Scaled scores from a third-party half-length are directional at best.
If you would rather not be contacted. The AAMC sample test asks for far less, and the MedSchoolCoach half-length diagnostic is the other free half-length in this category.
Final verdict
As a free diagnostic, this is a good one. It is honestly labelled on the page, it covers all four sections, it gives you five attempts, and it does not take a card. Most free MCAT material is worse than that.
The problem is what gets said about it elsewhere. Students arrive expecting a free full-length, plan a test day around it, and get a 113-question exam instead. That is not Altius being misleading. Its own page says half-length in the first sentence.
How we assess and score every product on this site is set out in our review methodology, and the rest of the free options sit on the MCAT diagnostic test listing.
Altius free MCAT practice exam FAQs
Is the Altius MCAT practice exam really free?
Yes. The half-length exam is free and the page states that no payment card is required. You do have to complete a signup form that asks for your name, email, phone number, region, school and planned MCAT date.
How many questions is the Altius free exam?
113 questions. Altius describes it as a half-length exam drawing on all four MCAT sections. A full-length MCAT is 230 questions, so the free test is just under half.
How many times can I take the Altius free exam?
Five, according to the Altius exam page. That lets you retake it after a block of content review to see whether a weak section has moved.
How much do the paid Altius practice exams cost?
One exam is $40, five are $169 and ten are $299, each with one year of access and unlimited attempts. Those are full-length exams of 230 questions, unlike the free one.
Should I use the Altius free exam as my baseline score?
Use it to find your weakest section, not to predict a score. A half-length exam cannot measure the endurance that decides the back half of a real MCAT, so treat the result as direction rather than a forecast.
We may earn commissions from some links on this page, but this does not affect our reviews or your experience.
Our Verdict
Altius gives away a genuine half-length MCAT exam, 113 questions across all four sections, with five attempts and no payment card. That is a better free offer than most, and it runs on the same software Altius sells. Just do not plan around it as a full-length. It asks 117 fewer questions than a real MCAT, so it can tell you what you know and almost nothing about whether you can hold up for seven hours. Take it early, then buy length somewhere.
