Pass
Your score is 0 points above the 75 passing line. At or above the 75 minimum passing score.
First-time pass rate, accredited programs
95.2%
2024. Most U.S. and Canadian dental students pass on the first attempt.
First-time pass rate, non-accredited programs
74.7%
2024. Mostly internationally trained candidates.
The INBDE trips people up because it reports a number, a pass/fail, or nothing at all, depending on how you did. This page clears that up.
Enter a scale score above and the calculator tells you exactly where it falls against the one number that matters: the 75 passing line.

The Integrated National Board Dental Examination is pass/fail. Performance is reported on a scale score from 49 to 99, and the minimum passing score is 75.
Anything from 75 to 99 is a pass. Anything from 49 to 74 is a fail.
That single threshold is the whole scoring story. There is no honors tier, no class rank, and no separate cutoff by subject. The JCNDE determines pass or fail solely from your overall scale score.
Why Passing Candidates Get No Number
This is the part that confuses most examinees.
- If you pass, your report says only "pass." No number.
- If you do not pass, your report includes your numeric scale score (somewhere from 49 to 74) so you can gauge how close you were and plan remediation.
So if you passed and were hunting for your score, there is nothing wrong with your report. A number would only appear if you had failed.
Scale Scores Are Not Raw Scores
A scale score of 75 does not mean you answered 75% of questions correctly.
INBDE scale scores are statistically derived so that performance can be compared fairly across different test forms. Some questions are also experimental and unscored, and you cannot tell them apart from scored questions. You are not penalized for guessing, so answering every item is always in your interest.
How The INBDE Is Structured
The exam runs across two days with roughly 500 items total:
- Day 1: three sections of 100 standalone items each, plus a section of case-based items
- Day 2: two sections of case-based items
The two days must fall within seven days of each other. Only scored items count toward your 49 to 99 scale score.
INBDE Pass Rates In Context
For most U.S. and Canadian dental students, the INBDE is not the bottleneck people fear:
- First-time, accredited-program candidates: about 95% passed in 2024
- First-time, non-accredited-program candidates (mostly internationally trained): 74.7% in 2024
First-time failure at accredited programs was under 1% for several years and rose modestly in 2024 after a scoring-standard update. If you trained at a CODA-accredited school and prepared properly, the odds are strongly in your favor.

FAQ
Can I convert my practice test percentage into an INBDE scale score?
No, and no accurate tool can. The JCNDE does not publish a raw-to-scale conversion, and scale scores depend on the specific form you take. Use practice percentages to judge readiness, not to predict a scale score.
Is a 74 close to passing?
A 74 is one point below the 75 cut, so yes, it is close, but it is still a fail. Candidates near the line usually pass on a retake after a focused review of their weakest content areas.
Does a higher INBDE score help my residency application?
Not in the way a number would suggest, because passing candidates never receive a score to report. Programs see pass or fail, so the goal is simply to clear 75.
