Expert Rating
The ADA official DAT practice test costs $100 for all six modules, or $20 for any single module, and it is the only DAT practice material written by the people who write the DAT. It is also the only one that will not tell you how you did. The ADA's own product page says "the number of correct answers will be reported upon completion of each module. Scores will not be provided."
That single sentence decides who should buy this. It is a sample of genuine test items, not a practice test you can grade yourself against a target.

What the ADA official DAT practice test is
The DAT is owned and written by the American Dental Association's Department of Testing Services, which also sells practice material for it. This is that material. It is not a course, a question bank or a tutoring product, and the ADA makes no claim about score improvement anywhere on the page.
You buy it in one of two ways. The Full Practice Test is $100 and contains six modules:
- Biology 101, 40 items
- General Chemistry 101, 30 items
- Organic Chemistry 101, 30 items
- Reading Comprehension 101, 25 items
- Perceptual Ability 101, 30 items
- Quantitative Reasoning 101, 40 items
That is 195 items in total, with an allotted time of 3 hours 5 minutes divided into timed sections. There is no break, and the ADA states that once you click Begin Test you must finish inside the allotted time.
Or you buy modules one at a time at $20 each. Eight are sold this way: the six above, plus Perceptual Ability 102 and Perceptual Ability 103, each another 30 items. The ADA says the individual modules are identical to the ones in the Full Practice Test, with those two extra PAT sets as the only difference. Access to any module expires 24 hours after you buy it, and the test ends when that window closes even if you are mid-question.
The items themselves come from the test constructors who build the live exam, and the ADA says they mirror the actual test specifications, with the caveat that "some modules/sections have fewer items than the actual test." That caveat does a lot of work, as the next section shows.
ADA official DAT practice test review for 2026
The score report is a count of right answers and nothing else
This is the fact that should decide your purchase, and no third-party page we found states it.
DAT scores have not been reported on the old 1 to 30 scale since March 1, 2025. The ADA's guide, Understanding the New DAT Score Reporting Scale, replaced it with a three-digit scale running from 200 to 600 in 10-point increments, and every score sent to ADEA AADSAS now uses it, including results from before the switch, which were converted. If you are weighing an offer against a school's published average, 200 to 600 is the language that average is written in. We built the DAT score conversion tool because so many students are stuck holding numbers on both scales, and the DAT scoring guide explains how the sections combine.
The official practice test reports on neither scale. It gives you the number of questions you answered correctly in each module, and the ADA states plainly that scores will not be provided. There is no scaled score, no Academic Average, no percentile, and no section analysis.
That is a defensible decision by the ADA. Scaling a 30-item module against a 100-item section would produce a number with no psychometric meaning, and the organisation that publishes the real scale is not going to invent a fake one. But it does mean the product cannot do the job most students buy a practice test for. Every paid competitor we review returns an estimated score; this one returns a tally.
What it is genuinely good for is calibration of a different kind. You find out whether real DAT items feel like the ones in your prep course, and you find out how many of them you get right. If a course's questions are much harder or much easier than these, that is worth knowing before test day.
Two sections are full length, two are not
The "fewer items" caveat is not evenly spread. We compared each module in the $100 bundle against the section lengths the ADA publishes on its DAT exam page.
Items in the $100 ADA Full Practice Test against the real DAT. Source: ADA DAT application and DAT exam pages, read October 2026.
The three science modules add up to 100 items, which is exactly the Survey of Natural Sciences on the real test. Quantitative Reasoning 101 is 40 items, exactly the real section. Those two are honest full-length rehearsals.
Reading Comprehension is 25 items against 50. Perceptual Ability is 30 items against 90, so the bundle gives you one third of the section most students find hardest.
There is a way around the PAT gap, and it is the most useful thing we can tell you about buying this product. Perceptual Ability 101, 102 and 103 are 30 items each, which is 90 items, exactly a full-length PAT. They cost $20 apiece, so $60 buys a complete official PAT. Two of those three modules are not in the $100 bundle at all, so a student who buys the Full Practice Test expecting to rehearse the PAT has bought a third of one. If the PAT is your weak section, buy the three PAT modules and skip the bundle. Our free perceptual ability drills are a reasonable way to warm up first so you are not spending official items on technique you have not learned yet.
Three hours and five minutes is not a DAT
The real DAT takes five hours and 15 minutes of total administration time, per the ADA. The Full Practice Test is allotted 3 hours 5 minutes with no break.
Stamina is one of the two things a full-length practice test is supposed to build, along with pacing. This product builds pacing inside each section, because the section timings are real, but it cannot build stamina, because it is two hours shorter and ends before fatigue becomes the problem. If you want to know what hour four feels like, you will need a different product.
The 24-hour access window is the other practical constraint. Competitors sell 90 days to a year of access, which lets you retake a form late in your prep to measure movement. Here, the module is gone the day after you buy it. Plan the sitting before you pay, and treat each module as a single use.
Pricing
Everything is priced per module, with one bundle discount. Prices verified on the ADA application page on October 15, 2026.
| Option | Price | Items | Cost per item |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Practice Test, six modules | $100 | 195 | $0.51 |
| Biology 101 | $20 | 40 | $0.50 |
| Quantitative Reasoning 101 | $20 | 40 | $0.50 |
| General Chemistry 101 | $20 | 30 | $0.67 |
| Organic Chemistry 101 | $20 | 30 | $0.67 |
| Perceptual Ability 101, 102 or 103 | $20 each | 30 each | $0.67 |
| Reading Comprehension 101 | $20 | 25 | $0.80 |
Buying the bundle's six modules one at a time would cost $120, so the Full Practice Test saves $20. That is a real discount, but it is only a good deal if you want all six. Two sensible alternatives:
- PAT only, $60. All three Perceptual Ability modules, 90 official items, a full-length PAT. Nothing else.
- Sciences only, $60. Biology, General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, 100 items, the complete Survey of Natural Sciences.
Against the paid alternatives this is cheap in absolute terms and expensive for what it withholds. The Kaplan standalone practice pack is $149, half as much again, and that price buys answer explanations and 90 days of access rather than a single sitting and a tally. How we weigh price against what you actually get is set out in our review methodology.
Who the ADA official DAT practice test is best for
Buy it if you want to see real DAT items before test day and you already have a course that scores you. Used that way, for one sitting, it answers a question no third-party product can: are the questions I have been drilling like the real ones?
It also suits a student with one clearly weak section. The $20 unit price means you can buy a single official module, and the three-module PAT is the strongest version of this product.
Finally, it suits anyone who wants the real interface and real timing for a section they are nervous about, without paying for a course they do not need.
When you might look elsewhere
If you want a scored, full-length, repeatable practice test, this is the wrong product and the alternatives are better at it:
- DAT Booster at $449 includes 10 full-length tests and 80 subject tests with scoring and explanations, which is where most students should start.
- DAT Bootcamp gives detailed answer explanations and a Prometric-style interface, so you get the interface rehearsal plus feedback.
- Kaplan DAT practice tests sell standalone from $149 with 90 days of access, if you want scored tests without a full course.
- Princeton Review and DAT Cracker are also covered in our roundup of the best DAT practice tests.
None of those use official items. That is the trade, and it is the whole decision: official questions with no feedback, or unofficial questions with a score report.
Final verdict
Our rating is 3.5 out of 5. It loses points for the absent score report, the short Perceptual Ability and Reading Comprehension sections and the 24-hour window, and gains them back for item authenticity and a low cost per question. You can see where DAT scores sit against each other with our DAT score calculator, and compare every product we have tested on the DAT hub.
ADA official DAT practice test FAQs
Does the ADA official practice test give you a DAT score?
No. The ADA states that the number of correct answers is reported at the end of each module and that scores will not be provided. You will not receive a 200 to 600 scaled score, an Academic Average or a percentile, so the result cannot be compared with a school's published averages or converted using a concordance table.
Is the $100 ADA full practice test the same length as the real DAT?
Not quite. It is 195 items against 280 on the real exam, and 3 hours 5 minutes against five hours and 15 minutes of total administration time. The Survey of Natural Sciences and Quantitative Reasoning sections are full length. Reading Comprehension is half length and Perceptual Ability is one third of the real section.
How do I practise a full-length PAT with official items?
Buy Perceptual Ability 101, 102 and 103 separately at $20 each. They are 30 items apiece, so the three together are 90 items, exactly the real section. Only PAT 101 is included in the $100 Full Practice Test, so the bundle alone will not give you a complete PAT.
How long do you have access to the ADA practice test?
Twenty four hours from purchase, per module. The ADA warns that when the time expires the test ends even if you are taking it at that moment, so start a module only when you can finish it in one sitting.
Is the ADA practice test worth it alongside a prep course?
For one sitting, yes, if you want to confirm that your course's questions resemble real DAT items. It should not replace a scored practice test, because it reports no score and cannot be retaken after a day. Most students get more from a course with full-length scored exams and use the official modules as a reality check near the end of their prep.
We may earn commissions from some links on this page, but this does not affect our reviews or your experience.
Our Verdict
The only DAT practice written by the people who write the DAT, and the only one that will not score you. The ADA reports the number of correct answers per module and nothing else, so you cannot turn a result into a 200 to 600 estimate. Natural Sciences and Quantitative Reasoning are full length, but the Perceptual Ability section in the $100 bundle is one third of a real PAT and each module expires 24 hours after purchase. Buy it to see real DAT items, not to find out where you stand.
