NCLEX RN Mastery is made by Higher Learning Technologies, a US company that runs the same Mastery app across about a dozen exams, from ATI TEAS to the INBDE to the PANCE. The NCLEX-RN app is actively maintained: it was on version 35.4 the week this review was written, the fourth release since the start of August. The provider says 3.2 million nursing students have used it.

It is a question bank first and everything else second. What a subscription includes:

• 4,000+ practice questions with rationales, covering select all that apply, hotspot, case study and ordered response formats
• An adaptive engine that raises or lowers difficulty as you answer, the same principle the real exam uses
• An AI tutor that explains any question in steps and answers follow-up questions about it

• Discussion threads under each question, answered by other students and by US-based nurses
• Performance reports that flag weak areas, plus weekly content updates

The free tier is unusually generous for a paid app: 10 questions a day, forever, with no card. That is enough to judge the question style before you pay anything, and it is the first thing to do before reading any review, including this one.

The question bank is bigger than the ones it is cheaper than

At 4,000+ questions, Mastery carries more items than Archer at 3,100+ and more than UWorld, which scales to about 3,200 on its longest plans. It also costs a quarter of what they do. That combination is rare enough to be worth a second look, and the second look turns up a caveat.

The provider does not publish one question count. The product page says 4,000+ in two places. The App Store description says 4,000+. The subscription card on that same App Store listing says 3,600+. Nobody is being dishonest, and a bank that is growing weekly will lag its own marketing, but plan around 3,600 rather than 4,000 and you will not be disappointed.

The bank is also thinner on Next Generation NCLEX detail than its rivals. Archer publishes how many of its items are select all that apply and separates standalone NGN items from unfolding case studies. Mastery lists the formats it covers without counts. If NGN case study volume is what you are shopping for, that silence matters.

The AI tutor is the feature that justifies the price

Every question bank shows you a rationale. Mastery's tutor lets you argue with it. Miss an item, and you can ask why your answer was wrong, ask it to restate the reasoning a different way, or ask about the drug in the stem. On a phone, in the gap between clinical and dinner, that is the difference between reading an explanation and understanding one.

It is also the reason the price works. A tutor that answers follow-ups is doing part of the job a content course does, at $19.99 a month rather than several hundred. It is not a substitute for being taught a topic the first time, and it cannot tell you what you do not know to ask, but for a student patching holes it is the most useful thing in the app.

What it will not do is teach you nursing

There is no lecture series here. Mastery ships video rationales attached to questions, not a content curriculum, and the provider does not claim otherwise. The app tests knowledge and explains individual items; it does not build the knowledge from scratch.

Worth noting for anyone who used this app a few years ago: mnemonics used to be its calling card, and reviewers on the App Store listing still praise them. The current product page and the current App Store description do not list mnemonics as a feature at all. The app now leads with the AI tutor and the adaptive engine. The recurring complaint in the App Store reviews is support speed when a subscription breaks, with students describing multi-day waits to get premium access restored. The provider responds publicly to those reviews, but build in a buffer rather than subscribing the night before you plan to start.

Two things fall out of that table. Month to month, the website is $5 cheaper for exactly the same product, so start there. Over a year the comparison flips and the in-app plan is $5 cheaper in total, which is a rounding error either way.

One more caution. The App Store listing quotes two different one-month prices: $29.99 in the description text and $24.99 in the in-app purchase list, alongside several other subscription products with names like Unlimited Plus and Student RN. Read the price on the screen before you confirm.

The triple-your-money-back guarantee is real and it is conditional. The guarantee page lists six requirements: you attend a US-accredited school, you buy at least 14 days before your exam, you complete at least 50 percent of the app's content, your account data has not been reset, you sit the exam within 18 months of graduating, and it is your first attempt using the app. Meet all six, fail, and they mail a check for your purchase price plus an additional 200 percent after you send a receipt and official exam results.

Read that third condition twice. Finishing half of 4,000 questions is 2,000 questions, which is a serious study plan on its own. The guarantee rewards students who were going to do the work anyway, which is how every pass guarantee in test prep is built. The provider's claimed 99.7 percent pass rate among users should be read the same way, as a figure from the company rather than an independent measurement.
