The book most students still shop for as "Kaplan NCLEX-RN Prep Plus" is sold today as NCLEX-RN Prep, Twenty-sixth Edition (2026), ISBN 9781506296128, at a $54.99 list price for 576 pages. It is worth buying if you know your nursing content and keep losing points to the way questions are worded, because that is the whole subject of the book.

It is the wrong buy if you want practice volume. Kaplan publishes no total question count for this edition. What it counts is 8 end-of-chapter practice sets, 1 full-length practice test in the book, and 1 free online computerized test.

One thing no NCLEX book roundup seems to mention. This book carries a pass guarantee, which is close to unheard of in print. The cover says "Passing Score Guaranteed" with a footnote reading "Or your money back. Conditions apply. See inside for details." Those conditions are inside the book, so you cannot read them before you buy.

Kaplan NCLEX-RN Prep Overview

Kaplan has been publishing NCLEX books for 26 editions, and this one has a narrow job. It is not trying to re-teach nursing school. It is trying to fix the gap between knowing the material and picking the safest answer under time pressure on the NCLEX-RN.

Kaplan's own framing on its NCLEX-RN review books page is that the exam "is not just about what you know, it's about how you think". The book is built around that claim.

What Kaplan states you get:

Worth correcting one thing that circulates about this book, including in our own earlier NCLEX book roundup. Kaplan's famous Decision Tree is not what this book is selling. On Kaplan's books page the Decision Tree is named under the NCLEX-RN Content Review Guide, a separate title. This book calls its method the 10 critical thinking pathways.

The strategy content is the product, and it is current

The NCLEX changed shape with the Next Generation format, and item types like Bowtie and Trend ask you to do something different from a four-option question. A Bowtie item makes you commit to the condition, the actions and what you would monitor in one linked answer, so a wrong read at the center takes the rest down with it. Reading about how to attack those before you meet one is genuinely useful, and this is the part of the book that earns the price.

The critical thinking pathways are the same idea applied to reasoning: a repeatable route from the stem to the safest answer, rather than a fact to memorize. If you are the student who narrows every question to two answers and then picks wrong, this is the book for that specific problem.

The 576 pages are also honest about scope. This is a few weeks of reading, not a semester, and the content review is organized by client needs so you can jump to a weak area.

The practice volume is the weak point, and Kaplan will not quantify it

Here is the number that is missing. Neither Kaplan's books page nor the publisher's product page states how many practice questions are in this book. Both pages describe the contents in detail and neither gives a total.

That matters because question volume is how students compare NCLEX resources, and the figures floating around for this book are not Kaplan's. Set it against the counts in our reviews of the alternatives: Saunders bundles 5,700 or more, Made Incredibly Easy 3,500 in print and more than 3,000 online, and HESI 1,200 on its companion site. Lippincott Q and A states no total either, and packs 43 practice tests into 1,152 pages.

Eight practice sets and one full-length test is a check on whether the strategies stuck. It is not a question bank, and nobody should plan to sit this exam on it. A pass guarantee you cannot read the terms of

The publisher's page states it plainly: "We're so confident in Kaplan's NCLEX-RN Prep that we guarantee it: study with this book and pass the NCLEX or get your money back." The cover carries the same promise with an asterisk.

So we went looking for the terms. Kaplan publishes a Pass Guarantee Eligibility and Redemption page, and it is specific: for the NCLEX-RN course guarantee you must be a graduate of an NLN or CCNE-accredited program, sit the exam on your first attempt within 6 months of graduating, take the Diagnostic and Readiness Tests, attend every class session, answer every question on the seven Question Trainer tests, stay out of the Online Study Center after your exam, call within 20 days and return all materials.

That page never mentions a book. It covers course enrollments, Bar Review and the Higher Score Guarantee for courses and tutoring. So the book's guarantee is real and Kaplan states it in writing, but the conditions attached to it are printed inside a book you have to buy first. Treat it as a small bonus rather than a reason to choose this book, and read the fine print the day it arrives while a return is still possible. Kaplan NCLEX-RN Prep Pricing

The list price is $54.99 for the trade paperback, read on the publisher's page on 13 September 2026. Printed directly beneath it is "price may vary by retailer", and that disclaimer does real work here.

Kaplan does not sell this book itself. Every buy control on its own books page sends you to Amazon, and the publisher lists seven retailers. So $54.99 is a reference price, not a checkout price, and what you pay depends on where you buy and when. Both promotional course prices above were running with discount codes on the day we checked, so they move too.

At $54.99 the book is about a fifth of the promotional price of Kaplan's own self-paced course. That is the honest comparison to make: if strategy is what you are short of and you have questions to drill elsewhere, the book is the cheap version of the same thinking. Who Kaplan NCLEX-RN Prep Is Best For

• Students whose content is solid but whose scores are not. If you knew the material and still missed questions in nursing school, the 10 pathways target exactly that
• Anyone meeting Next Generation item types for the first time. Bowtie, Trend, Matrix and Cloze questions reward a plan, and this book gives you one for each
• Retakers who need a different angle. Reading Saunders again rarely fixes a failed attempt. Changing how you work a question sometimes does
• Students on a short timeline. 576 pages is realistic in a few weeks alongside a question bank
• Anyone already drilling in a digital bank who wants a cheap strategy layer on top of it

When You Might Look Elsewhere

• You want one book to learn from. Saunders Comprehensive Review runs past a thousand pages with 5,700 or more questions and is the better first purchase for most students
• You want questions in print. Lippincott Q and A Review and NCLEX-RN Q and A Made Incredibly Easy are built as question books, with banks this one cannot approach
• You used HESI exams in nursing school. HESI Comprehensive Review will feel like the material you already practiced on, though it costs more for a shorter book
• You want adaptive practice and analytics. No book does that. UWorld and Archer Review do, and the NCLEX exam guide explains what the test plan expects before you pick anything

If you take one thing from this review, make it the name. Search "Kaplan NCLEX-RN Prep Plus" and you will find listings and roundups for a product Kaplan no longer lists under that name.
